| Dear DMFC : I see a couple other people have already posted to
your bulletin board about the Golddiggers being in Las Vegas this weekend.
I was actually in the audience to hear and see them on the radio show and
was mesmerized that they haven't changed a bit since they appeared on Dean's
TV show. I just wanted to know what their secret was for never aging?

Dear DMFC : I happen to have been at the Stirling Club dining with
a group of people that were having a reunion in Las Vegas, and we saw a
large group of ladies being photographed in the grand foyer who were all
beautifully dressed and having a good time. My husband said that he thought
some of them looked familiar and asked our waiter what was going on. He
told us that they were the Golddiggers and that they had something to do
with Dean Martin. My husbands blood pressure almost shot up through the
ceiling when he heard that and proceeded to inform the waiter how important
these ladies were to Dean and how important they were to Bob Hope on his
Vietnam tours that we all saw on TV.
Needless to say, the topic at our table was all about Dean and
the Golddiggers. The waiter pointed out a young man who had walked pass
our table a bit later and said that he was the president of Dean's fan club,
so my husband in a flash got up and ran after him to ask. The nice man told
my husband that he could peek in and catch a glimpse at the ladies having
a good time dancing and celebrating.
After my husband returned to the table, he was in heaven. I never
saw a bigger smile on his face. The gentleman introduced himself and gave
us his card, and told us all about how much fun they were having and told
us about the Dean Martin fan club.
We never knew about this, but my husband is acting like a little
kid again, thrilled to death about the night he saw the real Golddiggers
in person.
I had to write you my story and tank you for being such a grand
host.

Hi Marilyn - I just arrived back from a fantastic
weekend in Las Vegas celebrating with the girls! It was more fun than I
could possibly describe! Actually, I should say "WE" had more
fun than I could possible describe! The girls had a blast!
A live radio show was first on the list for
everyone that could make it on Thursday. It was at a major hotel with an
audience of 500 people on the very popular Dennis Bono Show. Some of the
girls were actually rushing into the studio during air time hugging each
other a minute before going on the air, as they arrived.
Over the weekend, there was a lot of feasting,
dancing and singing, but most of all... story telling and recalling so many
precious memories.
Four days went by wayyyyyy too fast... but
we were so lucky to have taken tons and tons of pictures.
I hate to think that it's over. The pain
I have in my cheeks from all the smiling is still there and won't go away.
I can't wait to tell you (and show you) all about it in the next DMFC issue!

Listen to King of the Road -- great background vocals. Sounds like the Jordainaires. He has a Crosby-Orbison-Darin-Sinatra quality that is Dean. Since Dean Martin retired from show business, and has long ago passed away, we have never seen another performer in his caliber come along. I don't think the world ever will. We saw Jeanne Martin there too! It was a great night and the tribute that Dom DeLuise gave was marvelous. Thank you DMFC for letting us know about this event, and for making us feel so at home! By the way, the museum is a beautiful building and place to visit! (Maria Emilsson - Sweden) Dear DMFC : I have a few friends who were in Lowellville, Ohio back when Dean was dealing cards and he borrowed 20 dollars from a guy by the name of Tutti Pepe and and another guy he borrowed 25 dollars form by the name of Dan Lupostrange. Tutti has got 2 sons left when he passed away before Dean and Dan passed right around the time Dean died. Dean also had to bum some smokes from a few guys that lived in Hillsville, Pa. which is real close to Lowellville, Ohio. These guys used to laugh and joke about him when he made it big time. I love to listen to his songs on my 1950 Seeburg Jukebox which plays the 45-RPM records. I have lots of these records, which I listen to when I am feeling sad. His songs make me feel really happy. I have alot of the 33-1/3 RPM record albums. Sometimes I would put some records on, and since Dean is so relaxed when he sings, that I would sometimes fall asleep when listening to his voice. As avid Dean fans we took, beyond our provisions, an ample supply of the great mans work which helped us through the round the clock rowing routine (There is nothing like surfing down a 20 foot wave at night with Volare as the backing track). In a couple of weeks I will be heading off to Japan to attempt to become the first Britain to row solo, 6000 miles across the North Pacific Ocean ending at the Golden Gate Bridge, some four to six months later. Once again the great mans work will be accompanying me and I look forward to many a day and night with only Dean and the Pacific wildlife for company. One of my very favorite songs became 'Memories are Made of This'-- a hit the year I was born, it probably helped me learn to speak-- but I have never been able to understand the words to the background lyric, and since discovering 'the music of your life' radio network, where they regularly play this song and all the other hits that Dean had, those background lyrics are becoming something of an obsession. I own two Dean cds that feature this song but can't quite make them out. The lyric in question is sung behind the chorus: 'Then add the wedding bells - one house where lovers dwell - three little kids for the flavor - stir carefully through the day - see how the flavor stays - these are the dreams you will savor.' ... Please and thank you, (Doug Reid - USA) Dear DMFC : I was born in the late 40s, so, naturally, when I was growing up with the name Jerry Dean I was very much aware of Jerry (Lewis) & Dean (Martin)! I loved those guys! In fact, I still remember that I was on vacation with my family in Estes Park, Colorado, when it came out in the papers that they were breaking up. I felt terrible, that is my strongest memory of that vacation trip. My Mother told me that it was probably just temporary, and they would get back together someday. She was just trying to cheer me up, but, no matter how much I enjoyed the things they did in later years (and I liked some of it a lot), I always hoped that my Mother was right, and that they would get together and perform every now and then. (Nadine Johnson - England) Dear DMFC : Hi Fan Centre, I noticed a bulletin from Jenney Coffey of Ireland regarding the lyric "I match the man behind the bar for the juke box" from "Little old wine drinker me". My version is slightly different to the answer offered. In England if a Pub is quiet or no music playing, to get things going, a customer may share the cost of some plays on the juke box with the landlord (Proprietor) - the customer matching the landlord. This way they both benefit. This would be my interpretation of the term. Regards. (Michael Clay - England) Hi Michael - "I Match the Man" is an well known phrase among older Americans. It was used for almost anything similar to betting. "I'll match you for that" was a common phrase also. The first person that would start the game would yell out 'heads or tails' while both players tossed a coin (usually a quarter or half dollar) into the air and catch them with one hand on the back of their other hand. Both would then reveal both coins. They BOTH have to be either heads up or tails up for the win or lose (depending on what the 'call' was while in the air. If one coin landed up and one landed down, they would toss again until both matched. Actually... this has been asked by many folks before... especially people from outside the U.S. (since this was a common phrase and game in the 'country' areas of America). Our DMFC president once asked "Little Ole Wine drinker Me" song writer, Dick Jennings, just to get his meaning, and he concurred with the explanation above. It has four gold strips on the sleeves . It has a sewn in Western Costume Company label with a typed label reading "No. 2877-6 Dean Martin #4." Can anyone Help me identify what performance this jacket was worn for? I do know that Dean wore a light gray flight uniform in "Airport" . Any information would be appreciated. Has time marched on to the point that they are now passe and a forgotten entity in American society? I know that in recent years there have been minor surges of popularity in Martin and Lewis and the Rat Pack because of TV movies, but even the ratings on those seem to have been dismal. It's so different than it was twenty some years ago. We have been going there for nearly 40 years now, and without a doubt, Dean Martin was the most memorable performer that ever was. As a matter of fact, finding anything that's not 'hip-hop' , 'grunge' or 'flip-flop' is pretty hard. No wonder these record stores are complaining of a lack of profit. There are many fans even younger than that. It seems Dean has touched many people of all ages. I correspond with a little girl from Australia and she is 12 years old. I really think that he's getting wayyyyy too intense! Most people that saw this TV movie gave it an "F" rating. The accent this English actor gave Dean was so bad, and his movements were not anything special, as the story. Unless you are an impersonator, who cares if Dean leaned way down while singing a song? The skit was ( he remembers) on Mr. Martin's TV Variety Show. He remembers it as involving Phil Harris and Dean Martin finger-painting a woman. He thinks it might have been one of the Golddiggers or maybe Goldie Hawn. I know this isn't much to go on but he remembers seeing this with my mother (now deceased) and says it was hilarious. Anyway, on the CD recording of "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" he seems to garble the lyrics "...growin' old..." - Having seen the recent TV movie about Dean and Jerry, I noticed that when the Martin character was seen singing at a mike, he would swoop down almost as if throwing himself off balance, and then stand upright and continue singing. My questions: Is his enunciation of these lyrics connected in anyway to how he choreographed himself while singing ? And, apart from the Vegas shows we've seen pieces of featuring the Rat Pack, is there other concert footage of Dean that shows this unusual movement ? BTW, I don't recall seeing anything like this on his TV show so it's possible that the actor in the TV movie was inventing this. And it seems odd that Dean would allow a recording to go forward if he slurred or muffed the words. Any comments welcome. I would venture to say that there will be footage of these performers with Dean Martin in the programs. (Laura Harris - New York) Dear DMFC : For the better part of my life I thought Dean Martin and I shared the same birthday (June 17). Every year, I would be reminded of this because the newspaper would publish celebrity birthdays and his (as well as Barry Manilow's and Jason Patrick's and Joe Piscopo's). When Mr. Martin passed away, the obituaries all I read listed his birthday as June 7, which is consistent with information published on your website. The reason I'm writing is that a co-worker of mine is a huge DM fan, and when I told her my birthday, she said "that is Dean Martin's birthday". I told her, I used to think that, but I had also seen information indicating it was June 7. Do you know whether there has ever been a dispute over Dean's actual birthday or whether we are just crazy. Thanks, (Rich Malone) Hi Rich - An old "Reprise Records" biography from one of his latter albums had a typo in the date when sent out to radio stations and the press. From this point on, people kept the ball rolling on the mis-quoted date of birth. We actually have Dean's original birth certificate in our archives, including a couple of the church documents his family received from the church he was baptized in. I am only 22 and know many other young kids that are really starting to discover Dean Martin. I was playing on of my many Dean Martin cd's at the beach and this group of boys and girls were next to me and my girlfriend. After the first few songs, they all came over and asked me who that was singing "He sounds awesome!", and I told them it was Dean Martin. They said he is someone 'new'. I told them who he was, and they couldn't believe what I was saying. They started to write down his name and said they were heading for the record store, and sure enough the next day at the beach they were playing their new Dino cd's. It really was a cool thing to see this going on. Dean Martin is finding a new generation of younger people. (Clay - Massachusetts) Dear DMFC : I just joined the Dean Martin Fan Club. I have been a fan of Dean Martin for many years, and I am glad that there is a fan club for the fans. I had the pleasure of seeing one of Dean's shows at the Riveria in Las Vegas. I was 21 when I went to Vegas. This was the only time in my live that I ever flew, and if it wasn't for going to Vegas to see Dean I would of never got on that plane. I am 53 now and I have never stopped listening to his music, even my granddaughter who is 8 can tell you when he is on TV or the radio. She loves to sing Volare and knows the song by heart. Dean will always hold a special place in my heart and I will never forget him. I got married in 1972 and the song that we had for our first dance was Everybody Loves Somebody, it had to be a Dean Martin song. I watched the Dean Martin TV show every Thursday night and couldn't wait for the following week to see him again. Dean to me is the greatest and will always be, even now when I have a bad day at work or at home, I put on a Dean song and every thing seems allright. Dean I love you. (Doug Wilson) Dear DMFC : I belong to a variety of different news groups and online clubs. Yes, it's true that it can become difficult at times to wade through all of the junkmail that gets posted, and all of the personal notations that are bounced back and forth. You have to take the concept of this communication forum in a different way than straightline hardhitting information some of your readers are use to on conventional bulletin boards, such as this one. Here's some general information that I have printed from Modern Physiological Magazine concerning this. It might be of interest to your readers who comments previously: "Newsgroups in general are comprised of people who were once considered "pen-pals", now are referred to as "e-pals". Because a newsgroup or online club has a title and may represent a certain theme or personality doesn't mean that this will be the subject of it's content for most of the time. Actually, people try and connect-the-dots by finding a common interest to meet others. From that point on, the topic is usually thrown out the window, and the e-pal friendships begin. A newcomer to these groups can be instantly assaulted or booted out because they thought they would hear about the subject title, only to find out that, like the 'clicks at high school', the most popular (or loud) people rule the discussions and talk about everything from their pets operations and family quarrels to their own birthday's and cd collections. In reality, the most popular here are usually those who are the most quiet and shy when facing others in public. Try and understand that this is a different means of communicating for some. In past days, this form of attaching to others were branded the title of "lonely heats clubs". Many would fill out questionnaires about their likes and dislikes, and in turn check boxes about what they were seeking. Some charged exhorbant fees for their great expectations through singles' dating services and religious groupings. While the more ambitious would go to clubs and gatherings to try and connect, there are still those who have a harder time reaching out face-to-face , yet have the need of others. Today, with the confusion of whom to trust and with the ease of instant messenger and digital communication, it is much easier for someone to connect with a stranger. The media works both ways. While the news programs on television and radio continue on twenty-four hours a day bringing us all of the horror stories about strangers around us, the idea of sitting in one's safe and serene home, gazing into a flickering screen seems safe and harmless. Like a dating service, where you could send out a picture of someone else and pretend it is you - it's as easy to assume the role of another personality behind the keyboard of a computer. One can become a voice of authority. Many quickly share gifts among other members in an attempt to 'buy' true friendships. The newcomer that finds his or her way into these groups has to be forewarned that some put electric fences up around their property. Tread lightly at first, or you could be electrocuted or cut to shreds! All-in-all, the topics are what draw these people together and is used as a means of retreat to justify many causes or wounds. Newsgroups and online clubs can be a good tool if learning can be achieved. It can also be a detriment to those who will not accept the fact that it's only a stepping stone to further enhancement of their lives and not something they should be subjected to for many years of their precious lives. As a final assessment - many of these members of newsgroups will not try and communicate beyond their safe boundaries. Even if a voice of authority abounds around them, they will not leave the nest. If intimidated, they will not acknowledge others outside their world that may be able to dispel their authority, so a safe distance is always kept."
